Though I was trained as a filmmaker, and have historically put most of my creative energy into motion picture endeavors, I have also dabbled in photography. In recent years, I have concentrated more and more on the still image. I shoot both digital and film, and confess to an obsession with lenses and old cameras: optics and mechanism. I shoot half frame formats, 35mm, medium format, and large format. The latter offers the most dazzling flexibility: nearly any combination of lenses, shutters, and backs (various film formats and sizes, digital backs, hybrid backs combining other cameras, etc.). I have machined many of my own parts and adapters for these cameras in order to allow unique combinations within a modular ecosystem. This will be one of the subjects of future blog posts on this site.
In 2015 I founded Mercury Works, an open-source company that produces the Mercury Camera System, the first fully modular, open-ended, infinitely extensible camera system in the history of photography. With almost 500 modules, the system is theoretically capable of marrying just about any optical system (lens) with any recording medium, from the history and future of photography. It is an example of 3D printing and other “maker” driven innovation. We serve photographers around the world with custom cameras, instant films backs, and more.

Hello Zach,
Firstly, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to acquire that great Canon lens from you yesterday. It was, I think, an incredible chance of luck and timing and gives a nice back story. I got a bit interested in your background and found this website of yours. You have some interesting material here and I will have to read more! It seems that we share a lot of similar sensibilities and qualities that now I’m glad that it was more than I expected. The three of us in my family, who you briefly met, have come from art backgrounds and will be for life it seems. My daughter, Ella, is currently attending the Cooper Union in New York in the visual arts department and has just completed her first year. She is back here in LA for the summer and will return to school near end of August. I will include a link to some video projects she did showing on Vimeo. Have her in mind if there is any potential projects that you might have that you can include here in—she has a special talent. Any way it was great meeting you. Thanks!

Thanks Dave! It was a pleasure to meet you and your family as well. I watched a couple of Ella’s videos and enjoyed them. It’s great to have an art-making family! Stay in touch.
